The Isle of Wight County Planning Commission on July 22 recommended approval of an exception to Section 5‑2000.G of the county zoning ordinance that would allow an 8‑foot fence and a 10'6" gate at 10477 Halltown Road.
Cordell S. Benson of planning and zoning staff described the application and noted staff’s analysis found the fence would be largely invisible from the public right of way and therefore recommended approval with conditions limiting expansion beyond the submitted plan and specifying materials and design. Applicant Drew Stowe said the installation is intended primarily to protect a garden from deer and other wildlife; he told the commission the material is commercially used for animal‑exclusion fencing and that “the house is barely visible from the road.”
Commissioners discussed precedent concerns and whether other nearby owners had requested similar exceptions; staff said no comparable exception requests were on record and characterized the circumstances as unique because of the property’s setback and tree cover. The commission voted to recommend approval and will forward the application to the Board of Supervisors for final action.
The commission’s recommendation is advisory; the Board of Supervisors will consider the exception at a future meeting.
