Council issues proclamations, honors local coach and students, and confirms appointments

The San Antonio City Council used the Jan. 29 session for multiple ceremonial recognitions and appointments. Mayor Pro Tem Jalen McKee Rodriguez read proclamations for National Wear Red Day (American Heart Association) and for 'Coach Pop Day' to honor the career and community service of Coach Popovich. Representatives from the American Heart Association accepted the Wear Red proclamation and promoted the city's Go Red for Women summit and February awareness events.
Council members also recognized the Southwest Legacy High School Titan cheer team after they qualified for nationals in Orlando. Council member Munguia and others praised the team's turnaround and asked the public to support a fundraising goal of about $15,000 to cover travel, lodging and competition fees. Coach Graham, team captains including Alyssa Gutierrez, and Principal Roxy Freeman spoke about the achievement and the school's pride in the students.
On consent‑agenda highlights, Council member Galvan introduced Rosemary Gomez for appointment to the City‑County Joint Commission on Elderly Affairs and Joseph Nogel for the Small Business Economic Development Advocacy Committee; Council member Castillo noted the reappointment of Maria Cruz to the Zoning Board of Adjustments and acceptance of funding for a care station program (Item 23).
