Staff asked the commission to consider designating a 1.52‑acre town‑owned parcel at 401 South Atwood Road as a public park and to suggest a name for the site.
Kevin said the parcel, conveyed to the town by the Park View at Bel Air subdivision developer, appears in the town's bike/pedestrian plan and could serve as a connection from the high school to Atwood Road. "The intention here is, 1, to designate this as a park. 2 and that will also help us... with getting grants, and also to implement this walking path or put it into the CIP process," he said. Town counsel reported the plat records the lot as a conservation area, which limits intensive development but does not prevent designation as a public park; because the town already owns the parcel, counsel said a resolution would suffice and no survey is required.
Commissioners discussed potential amenities, protections for the adjacent wetlands and a possible partnership with the nearby high school for environmental studies. Staff said the parcel is partially in the floodplain and that further planning would assess appropriate trail alignment and any required restoration work.
Commissioners asked staff to propose park names and to return with further details, including historical background and any grant opportunities. Several commissioners expressed support for preserving green space and for moving the idea into the capital‑improvement planning process.
