Planned features discussed included turn-by-turn navigation on driver tablets and a parent app with passenger tracking that notifies caregivers when a student boards, disembarks or when the bus approaches a stop.
Board members raised driver-staffing and absenteeism concerns. One board member, Mr. Seymour, said missed routes during the four-day school week can leave students with fewer in-school days, pressing the contractor for details on substitute availability. Contractor representatives acknowledged recent absences caused by illness and crashes but said they have increased starting pay and attendance bonuses and were prepared to staff routes with substitutes as needed.
"When an event is triggered, the device also captures sound," a vendor presenter said while describing the DriveCam system.
Vendors said the contract had been delivered to district officials earlier that morning; they and district staff said they did not foresee significant contentious points in the contract and expected scheduling and implementation to proceed after final review.
Next steps: district staff and the contractor will finalize contract details and begin phased deployment and beta tests of turn-by-turn navigation and parent notifications at selected locations.
