Warrick EMS reports nearly 8,000 runs in 2025; explains criteria for fire dispatch on medical calls

Tony O'Neil, operations lead for Warrick EMS, presented the agency's 2025 annual review to the commissioners on Feb. 9. O'Neil highlighted training improvements (OB and neonatal resuscitation NRP, international trauma life support, BLS/ACLS), the return of one remounted ambulance, remodeling of Medic 4, installation of a US digital paging system at three of six stations, a new command vehicle and partnerships with local EMT/medic schools for ride-alongs and training.
O'Neil told commissioners Warrick EMS handled "just a little under 8,000" runs in 2025, including approximately 5,377 transports to local hospitals, 1,185 refusals and 401 transfers crossing county lines. He said the service also acquired bariatric equipment on one ambulance to improve safe patient handling.
In response to a question about when fire departments are dispatched with the ambulance, O'Neil said the county uses a criteria list developed with the medical director that includes trauma, cardiac arrest and seizures among roughly eight to ten conditions that automatically add fire units to a medical run. "It'd be a trauma, cardiac, seizure... There's a list of 8 to 10 items," O'Neil said.
Commissioners thanked EMS leadership for the report and for efforts to expand training and interagency coordination. No formal action was required by the board on the report.
What happens next: EMS will continue monthly training initiatives, work on paging coverage expansion and coordinate with dispatch and fire departments under the existing criteria.
