The Bangor City Council on Feb. 9 issued a proclamation declaring February as Black History Month and separately recognized first responders for their role in the Jan. 25 plane crash at Bangor International Airport.
Councilor Carson read the Black History Month proclamation, which in part "do[es] hereby proclaim February as Black History Month to honor the legacy and achievements of black Americans throughout our shared history." Students from Bangor High School’s civil rights team and Ray Finney, director of community outreach for the school department, were invited forward to accept the proclamation.
Later in the meeting the council read a proclamation recognizing the emergency response to the private business‑jet crash on Jan. 25. The proclamation noted that the response involved "25 personnel from Bangor Fire Department, 26 from the Air National Guard's Airfield Fire and Rescue," airport personnel, investigators and mutual‑aid fire units from roughly 10 surrounding communities, and that responders worked under freezing temperatures and near‑blizzard conditions. The proclamation cited coordination with the National Transportation Safety Board and said personnel were engaged in nonstop response, planning and mitigation over several days.
Council members and other speakers closed the meeting by reiterating condolences to victims and appreciation for first responders. The proclamations were signed on behalf of Mayor Susan M. Hawes and the council.
