SAN ANGELO — The San Angelo Tiers Board voted to approve a funding recommendation for a North Tiers project at 216 West 5th, clearing the way for paving and ADA-accessible parking that staff said will bring the building into code compliance.
Hannah Morell of Development Services presented the project and the request: "They're asking for 75,000. Their proposed project cost is gonna be around 88,925, and their match will be 13,925," she told the board, saying the work would grade, pave and stripe a shared parking area and add ADA access so the tenant can occupy the building as a gym.
Staff explained the parking area is a shared arrangement with the adjacent McDonald's property and showed where 12 additional parking spaces would be added. A board member warned that the site already experiences congestion and said opening a gym could increase traffic near the loop and nearby school activity: "I'm just imagining that it's gonna be a nightmare," the member said during discussion.
Planning staff said a conditional-use review and a site plan had addressed traffic and access concerns, and that improvements — including safety fencing, an ADA route and other mitigation — were included in the proposed work. Morell said if recommended at full funding, the award would leave approximately $2,451,890 in available funds.
After asking for public comment (none was offered), the chairman called for a vote. The board voiced its support and the motion passed by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will finalize the award paperwork and process the project through the normal contracting and inspection steps; no further action or appeal was recorded at the meeting.
