Council confirms Historical Commission and Human Rights Commission appointees

Clerk's reading of Item 33 initially listed names that the clerk later acknowledged were former members. Councilor O'Quinn corrected the record and read the correct new appointees: Valerie Abbott for the community leader position (term expiring Feb. 3, 2028); Cheryl Morgan as the design-review committee representative (term expiring Feb. 3, 2028); Wayne Hester (term expiring 2029); Laura Knott as professional historian (term expiring Feb. 3, 2027); and Josh Vassa as the council'member ex officio representative. After a motion and second, the council voted to approve the appointments.
Separately, the council approved Item 34, appointing a member to the Birmingham Human Rights Commission from City Council District 5. Councilor O'Quinn nominated Jose Ramon for the District 5 seat with a term through Jan. 31, 2027; the nomination passed.
Council president Alexander welcomed the new appointees and thanked the Planning and Zoning Committee for its work on candidate selection. The appointments were approved as read; the council did not discuss additional amendments to these resolutions at the Feb. 3 meeting.
What happens next: appointees will serve the listed terms on the commissions and will perform their duties per commission bylaws and relevant city code.
