San Angelo preserves HOT fund support for cultural groups while planning Coliseum contingency

City staff presented a mostly flat hotel occupancy tax (HOT) projection for the next fiscal year and proposed targeted increases to cover shortfalls related to Coliseum renovations.
Staff highlighted a $149,000 proposed contribution to the civic events fund and a $150,000 addition to the sports complex contribution to offset revenue lost while the Coliseum is renovated. Jeremy Bartz of Discover San Angelo described marketing and website work in his HOT request, and Yuki (director, San Angelo Performing Arts Center) and leaders from the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts urged broader arts representation on the Public Art Commission to include performing arts and recommended better coordination for busking and public performance rules.
Council members asked staff to reconcile detailed line items and sponsorship/revenue assumptions prior to finalizing allocations. The council also agreed to revisit a $100,000 placeholder for the Concho Christmas celebration and asked staff to meet with event partners to refine that request before final action.
The council did not take final funding votes at the workshop; the HOT fund allocations will be finalized as part of the August 19 budget hearing and Sept. 2 adoption process.
