Holiday council holds public hearing on proposed historic designation for Casper Cottage

The Holiday City Council on Feb. 5 held a public hearing on a staff-backed application to add the late-19th-century Casper Cottage to the City of Holiday Historic Site Register. The application, submitted by nearby resident Ron Hilton, seeks to amend the municipal historic-designation list for the property at 2394 East Murray Holiday Road.
Ron Hilton described historical and architectural research on the house, which he said was completed in 1898 and associated with the Casper family. He recounted local context and construction details, noting the house’s transition from a shotgun cottage to a cross-wing form and features he described as “a little Victorian flair” including eyebrow arches and red doors. “I’d really like to see it preserved,” Hilton said.
Kim Duffy, chair of the Holiday Historical Commission, read a statement from the commission’s executive committee recommending that the Casper Cottage be included on the City of Holiday Historic Site Register. The commission highlighted the property’s association with Duncan Spiers Casper and its intact 1898 fabric, calling the house an increasingly rare example of its type.
City staff told the council the application meets the city’s criteria for historic designation (items at least 50 years old or with demonstrated significance) and recommended approval of the text amendment to the historic designation list. With no further public comment, the council closed the hearing. The chair indicated the item is scheduled for formal council consideration and a vote at the Feb. 19 council meeting.
If approved on Feb. 19, the council will amend the city’s historic-designation list to include the Casper Cottage and will provide any subsequent procedural notice or conditions required by local code.
