Frostburg commission approves replacement front door at 52 West Main Street

The Frostburg Historic District Commission on Feb. 9 approved an alteration at 52 West Main Street that will replace the building’s front door with a wood-look fiberglass entry and a glass storm door intended to preserve the building’s external appearance.
Darren Broadwater, who said he and a partner have owned the property since 2018, told the commission he wanted a more airtight, energy-efficient door that would match the look of the existing entry. “We'd like to put a new front and back door on the house,” Broadwater said, noting the back door was not submitted for approval because it is not subject to commission review.
Commissioners asked about the proposed door’s muntin pattern, finish and hardware. Broadwater described a fiberglass door with a wood-grain finish and said the contractor’s revised estimate was roughly half an initial $14,000 bid for two doors and related work. Commissioners noted much of the proposed brass hardware would be obscured by the storm door when viewed from the street.
A commissioner moved that the commission approve the proposal, citing compatibility of materials and appearance with nearby historic buildings. After a second and verbal 'aye' votes from those present, the chair declared the project approved.
The commission recorded no public comments on the item. The applicant thanked the commission before leaving the meeting.
The commission’s approval applies to the exterior door materials and appearance as presented; any changes to the design or materials would require additional review.
