Avery County commissioners approve series of budget amendments, grants and routine items

At its Aug. 5 meeting the Avery County Board of Commissioners approved multiple budget amendments, grant acceptances and routine items by voice vote.
Key approved items included:
- Parks and Recreation capital outlay amendment for field lighting, scoreboard replacement and gym upgrades: $37,973. - Central Dispatch roll-forward for radio tower repairs: $13,786. - Transportation capital outlay for vehicles (rolled to FY 24–25): $427,370; staff noted limited availability of specific vehicle types and that roughly 90% of the cost is county-funded under current assumptions. - Avery County Sheriff’s Office rollover for a Bearcat tactical response vehicle: $395,196 (vehicle ordered; manufacturer lead time expected). - Acceptance and recognition of an International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) victim services grant totaling $102,474.30, with detailed salary, fringe and supplies line items recorded. - Buildings and Grounds capital amendment to replace a gated entrance at the AG extension: $22,533.14. - A resolution creating a dedicated Wells Fargo account to receive occupancy tax collections for Avery County District A.
Board members moved and approved the items in sequence as presented by finance staff and department representatives. The board also approved routine tax collections and releases for July, accepted planning items (a single-lot approval at Cranberry Place, Lot 89), approved board appointments and adopted a proclamation recognizing Constitution Week. Minutes for May and June were approved and the board set a joint meeting with the school board for Aug. 22 at 5 p.m.
Most approvals were recorded as voice votes with aye responses and no roll-call tallies printed in the meeting record.
