Longview council will stop requiring speakers to state home addresses aloud at podium

At the start of a special Longview City Council meeting on Aug. 21, 2025, the presiding council member announced a revision to the council’s public-comment procedures that removes the requirement for speakers to state their home addresses aloud at the podium.
The presiding member said the change was requested by Debbie Fontaine and described the new procedure: speakers will still complete a speaker card listing name, address and contact information, but while at the podium they will need only to state their name and, if they wish, whether they are a Longview resident and which council member represents them. The presiding member stated this change was made “for safety reasons.”
The announcement was presented as a rules-and-procedures update and no vote or formal public comment on the change was recorded in the meeting transcript.
