Van Buren County Commission approves school, sheriff and ambulance measures; grants and policies signed

Commissioner Kale Crane moved to approve a budget amendment for Van Buren County Schools (Committee A), and the motion carried on roll call with all voting yes. The commission also approved a sheriff’s department budget amendment to move $1,600 to an SRO salary-supplement account; commissioners confirmed that the funds were part of a state grant tied to training completion.
The commission voted to remove a $7 solid-waste fee charged to James Nelson’s garage, finding the space is used only for storage. Commissioners also approved a request from the Burke Memorial Library to appoint Cindy Haines to its board after Justin’s departure.
On emergency medical services, the commission authorized a signing authority to accept a state endowment grant contract for Lisonbee Ambulance Service. The director said the county’s allocation under the cited house bill would be $30,303.03. The board also adopted an ambulance return-check policy, setting a $30 fee for returned checks ‘‘that Tennessee allows’’ and confirming that the county’s billing vendor can accept credit and debit cards.
The commission voted to give County Attorney Upchurch authority to draw up an updated contract with Acumen Global (to be carried forward under the likely name Fontaine/Fontana Group) and approved forming a seven-member fire-department committee comprising representatives from each fire department plus two commissioners; Michael Woodley and Tabitha were nominated as the commissioners to serve.
