Spokane council spotlights Lunar New Year with Hanfu presentation and city salutation

The Spokane City Council opened its Feb. 9 meeting with cultural programming recognizing Lunar New Year. A Hanfu fashion presentation by the Silk Road Chinese Dance Ensemble showcased traditional Chinese clothing from several dynasties and models representing historical styles.
Council member McCatcong read a formal salutation noting that 2026 is the Year of the Horse and recognizing Spokane's Asian American community for its social, cultural and economic contributions. "This event is designed to promote culture, cultivate friendship, and provide opportunities for our region to learn through experiencing traditional customs, food, and dancing," McCatcong read.
Ping Ping, representing Spokane United Stand and the Washington State Commission on Asian and Pacific American Affairs, accepted the salutation on behalf of organizers and described festival plans for Feb. 14 at Exhibition Hall A of the Spokane Convention Center. Ping Ping said the festival will bring together "24 ethnic groups" across the region and highlighted a "5,000 red envelope giveaway featuring over $20,000 donated by local businesses." The council invited festival attendance and posed for a group photo with presenters before proceeding to the legislative agenda.
The city encouraged community participation in the Feb. 14 Lunar New Year Festival; council members described the presentation as part of the city's effort to celebrate cultural diversity.
