The Shelbyville City Council voted Feb. 3 to join a Bedford County joint study committee charged with examining the feasibility of a senior tax freeze. The council authorized participation in a three-meeting study sequence and agreed to appoint two council members to serve alongside two county commissioners and the county mayor.
Staff described the schedule as three meetings over three months: the first meeting is Feb. 10, the second March 10 and the third on the second Tuesday in April; meetings will run 05:30–06:30 p.m. The mayor will serve on the committee, and Council members volunteered to represent the city. Noel volunteered to serve; another council member volunteered but indicated a potential conflict for the Feb. 10 meeting and offered to try to resolve it.
A council member asked whether the county mayor should participate while running for re-election; staff replied that the mayor still holds authority while in office and that the committee as constituted includes the county mayor. The motion to join the study committee carried by voice/roll call.
