Jackson County supervisors approve plans for two bridge replacements; bids to be advertised

Jackson County supervisors on Tuesday approved two resolutions authorizing plans, specifications, contract form and cost estimates for separate bridge-replacement projects, moving both projects to the bidding stage.
Don Stryker, presiding supervisor, opened public hearings on the 458th Avenue bridge (project LFMVB2253-7X-49) and the 17th Street bridge over Elk Creek (project LFMIA3320). County road staff told the board the 458th Avenue structure — located near the Buckeye area by Preston — will be posted for bids immediately if approved and is expected to be built in fiscal year 2027 depending on contractor scheduling. "This bridge is on 458th Avenue, for the locals around the area being around the Buckeye area over by Preston," county road staff said during the hearing.
Staff described a similar approach for the 17th Street replacement, saying the county is using late-start dates (July/August) to avoid winter construction delays and to have the bridges open for local harvest seasons. "So that way, assuming normal weather, there's no delays. They can be opened in time for the area residence for harvest," road staff said.
Supervisor Nin Flagle moved and Supervisor Mike Stitis seconded approval of Resolution 1165-02-10-2026 for 458th Avenue; the board approved the resolution by voice vote. The board likewise approved Resolution 1166-02-10-2026 for the 17th Street/Elk Creek crossing after no public comments were offered during that hearing.
The measures authorize county staff to finalize documents and advertise both projects for bid. County staff said start dates will depend on award timing and contractor schedules; one staff member said construction could begin in the summer but may fall into the following fiscal year if awarded after July 1.
The board also discussed ongoing work at the Channelworth Bridge, with staff reporting that H-pile for piers and other materials are on site and that coffer-dam work is planned once a crane arrives. "They have all the H pile for the piling for the piers and all that has arrived on-site," county road staff said.
The board took no separate action on Channelworth during the meeting; the bridge updates were provided as informational reports.

The board will proceed to advertise the approved projects for bidder submissions and let contracts according to the county procurement timeline.
