County staff recommend denying late tax-exemption application for North Omaha church; board approves resolutions

The Douglas County Board of Equalization voted to approve minutes from its Feb. 3 meeting and to set March 3, 2026, as the hearing date for certified assessment corrections. County staff informed the board that an application from North Omaha Church of God in Christ was received a year late and recommended denying the exemption as untimely.
Mike Goodwillie of the Sasser office told commissioners that the organization did not file an application in 2025 despite certified-mail reminders sent on March 14 and May 27, 2025, and that prior certified mailings had been unclaimed. "We have recommended denial because it's out of time," Goodwillie said. Commissioner Rogers had pulled the item from the consent block to attempt personal outreach; no representative from the church appeared at the meeting.
During public comment, resident Larry Storer said he resented that some property owners hold multiple tax-exempt properties and receive breaks while he pays full taxes; he also cited locations around Douglas County where exempt properties are concentrated. The board approved the resolutions taken in block, including the staff recommendation on the returned application, by voice vote, 6–0.
Next steps: the board set the certified-assessment-corrections hearing for March 3 and staff will proceed according to the board's action.
