Preservation commission votes to ask chair to reiterate support for preserving Centennial Bridge

The Rock Island Historic Preservation Commission voted to direct the commission chair to send a letter reiterating the body’s prior position favoring preservation and enhancement of the Centennial Bridge rather than demolition or alignments that would substantially alter its historic character.

During the meeting, Speaker 8 updated the commission on the Centennial Bridge project, saying several design alternatives had been removed from consideration and the project team had narrowed options to four: do nothing, renovate/rehabilitate the existing structure, a twin-bridge option (separate northbound and southbound structures), and a rebuild option that would alter arches and structural character. Speaker 8 said the project team intends to present a preferred alternative later in the year and expected another citizens advisory committee and technical advisory group meeting in April.

Speakers stressed a preference for rehabilitation and maintaining the bridge’s iconic historic character. Speaker 5 called the rehabilitate/repair alternative “one of the most positive” and urged the commission to reiterate its earlier resolution favoring preservation. Speaker 5 moved to ask the chair to send such a letter; Speaker 8 seconded the motion. The motion passed on a voice vote with all those present saying “aye.” Speaker 1 noted the project’s public comment window and that official comments on the plan would be accepted through Feb. 11 at the project website (centennialbridge.com).

What’s next: the chair will prepare and sign the letter reflecting the commission’s reiterated position and commissioners volunteering to help will coordinate with staff. The commission also encouraged staff to coordinate on any technical input they can provide in advance of April advisory meetings.
