Douglas County honors late Captain Patrick West and proclaims Black History Month

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 10 adopted a resolution recognizing the life and service of Captain Patrick West of the Douglas County Department of Corrections and unanimously proclaimed February as Black History Month.
Michael Myers, director of corrections, read the resolution honoring Captain West and described West as a mentor and steady presence for the department. "He was never, he never wavered in his support and his loyalty and ... helped me get to the point where ... I was able to make decisions," Myers said as he introduced the resolution and the captain’s family.
Commissioners offered brief remarks of condolence and appreciation. The board approved the resolution by voice vote.
Separately, Commissioner Rogers read a proclamation recognizing the contributions of African Americans and urged residents to observe Black History Month; the board approved the proclamation 6–0.
The board also recognized Joseph Gadeck for 17 years of service in the Department of Corrections and approved that retirement recognition unanimously.
What’s next: The recognitions were ceremonial resolutions and proclamations; no further board action on these items was recorded at the meeting.
