At its Feb. 10 meeting, the Codington County Commission approved a series of routine actions including a commercial lease for the Department of Health, multiple abatements and claims for payment, and an updated intergovernmental contract.
Lease: The commission authorized the chair to sign a carryover commercial lease between Michael Cole (property owner) and the Codington County Department of Health that converts a prior five-year lease to a month-to-month arrangement. The motion, moved by Commissioner Gable and seconded by Commissioner McElhaney, passed on a voice vote. Under the terms presented by staff, the rent increases to $2,100 per month and the county intends to backdate the lease to Jan. 1, 2026.
Intergovernmental contract: Commissioners approved an updated contract with the South Dakota Public Assurance Alliance. Staff said the revisions are textual (clarifying board representation limits and reformatting a notice paragraph) and do not change the contract's substantive intent. The motion passed on a voice vote.
Claims and abatements: The auditor presented multiple abatements (record numbers listed in the packet) and claims for payment, including detailed line items added after the packet went out (U.S. Geological Survey flood-monitoring charge of $11,006.45, a newspaper claim and other vendor charges). The auditor reported an ending county balance and register of deeds fees for January 2026; commissioners approved the auditor's account and the claims on voice votes.
Other routine actions: The commission approved declaring an older HP LaserJet printer surplus for destruction, moved the Feb. 24 meeting to Feb. 25 for scheduling reasons, and noted the Feb. 27 bid opening for highway supplies and weed chemicals. Personnel and travel requests (including a travel request for the director of equalization's office) were presented and approved.
