Coweta BOE previews draft 'distraction-free' policy to comply with state law limiting K–8 device use

District leaders on Nov. 11 presented a draft 'distraction-free education' policy intended to comply with OCGA 20-2-324.8 that, if adopted, would prohibit K–8 students from accessing personal electronic devices on school premises during school hours beginning July 1, 2026.
Superintendent Doctor Horton described the draft as aligned with Georgia Department of Education guidance and said many Coweta K–8 schools have already implemented similar practices in anticipation of the law. "Basically...students in K through 8, beginning on 07/01/2026 will not be permitted to access or use personal electronic devices while on school premises during school hours," Doctor Horton said.
The item was presented as a 30-day "sit" for review and comment; the superintendent welcomed feedback from board members and the public before the policy returns for a possible formal vote. Board members and staff emphasized that the draft should not represent a massive change for many K–8 campuses.
If the board approves the policy after the review period, district officials said they will implement it according to statutory effective dates and provide guidance to schools and families on enforcement and exceptions.
