Willis Road fourth‑graders demonstrate moon phases with Oreos at Coweta school board meeting

A group of fourth‑grade students from Willis Road Elementary demonstrated the moon’s eight phases using Oreo cookies during the Coweta County Board of Education meeting on Dec. 9, 2025.
Principal Randy Robbins introduced the students and teacher Katie McCurry, who described the lesson and its learning goals. "We talk about vocabulary — waxing, waning, gibbous, crescent — and then we use all that information to get Oreos," McCurry said, explaining the project helps students visualize the 28‑day lunar cycle.
Students identified each phase in turn. "This Oreo shows the new moon phase," one student said, demonstrating how the cookie represents the sun‑lit portion of the moon. The presentation closed with light‑hearted banter about sharing the cookies with board members.
The board also heard from Bill Hammond, the county 4‑H extension agent, who announced the winning holiday card designed by fifth grader Emma Dionofrio of Welch Elementary and described upcoming 4‑H activities.
The board approved recognitions for the student presentations by voice vote, 7–0. The presentations were part of the board's regular recognitions program, intended to showcase classroom learning and community programs.
