Albany allocates $2 million to seed medical‑district workforce housing

The Albany City Commission on Nov. 25 approved a $2 million allocation from the capital improvement fund to support a housing initiative in the medical district intended to spur workforce and catalyst housing development.

"This will be the $2,000,000 designated towards the lighthouse or medical district housing project," said Ms. Eaton, the staff presenter, noting the money was made available through an additional transfer into the capital improvement fund. She said the funds relate to a program concept designed to buy and build homes on identified lots and then replenish the fund by selling homes to qualified buyers.

Commissioners discussed priorities for the allocation, with some members urging the money be used primarily for construction (to lower home costs by removing land cost) rather than for infrastructure alone. Staff said the program will aim to serve a broad workforce population — including teachers, police officers and health‑care workers — and that more detailed program parameters will be returned to the commission for review.

Staff said 22 lots have been identified as part of the designated parcel list and that an additional $1.2 million for infrastructure had been approved previously, meaning the allocation complements other available funds.

The commission approved the resolution to designate the funds and asked staff to present program details, eligibility, and implementation steps at a future meeting.

Next steps: staff will circulate the lot list to commissioners, develop program design and present an agreement and implementation plan at a subsequent meeting.
