Commissioners briefed on Plan Rutherford; public hearing scheduled and materials posted

Commissioner Pettis Reid, chairing the planning commission presentation on June 23, described Plan Rutherford as a multi-year effort to prepare a comprehensive plan that responds to rapid county growth. Reid said the process began in 2022 with multiple public hearings across Rutherford County and a steering committee that incorporated public input into the draft plan.

Reid told commissioners the plan is intended as a "living plan" rather than a set of regulations and that it would guide growth and land-use choices through 2045. He referenced the legal requirement for comprehensive plans under Tennessee Code (as spoken: "TCA 13.3301302 of the Tennessee Code annotated") and urged commissioners and residents to review the plan at planrutherford.org and to attend a public hearing that evening.

Reid recounted outreach events (Lane Agriculture Park, Las Casas, Smyrna, Christiana, Plainview) that drew hundreds of participants, said the plan includes maps of bridges, roads, waterways and development patterns, and noted the plan will supersede the 2011 plan if adopted. Multiple commissioners stressed the plan's role in protecting farmland and identifying corridors for industrial and commercial development.

Commissioners asked how residents could submit questions and when the planning commission would respond; staff said questions from the evening would be noted and addressed at the next planning commission meeting, which was scheduled for 9 a.m. the following morning. Reid and other speakers encouraged residents to watch the county's channel 19 broadcast and to read the draft on the county website.

The presentation concluded with scheduling: public-works committee will discuss related Smyrna items on July 16 and the full commission will consider committee recommendations at its July 17 meeting.
