Summary
District 3 Commissioner Michael Rather announced his resignation effective the following day; the commission accepted the resignation and approved an expedited application and selection process with applications due Aug. 1 and steering review on Aug. 4.
Commissioner Michael Rather announced his resignation from the Rutherford County Board of Commissioners (District 3) at the July 17 meeting, saying personal and family reasons prompted the decision and that his resignation would be effective the following day. Rather told colleagues he had served with honor and thanked constituents for the opportunity to serve.
Chairman Pro Tem Trey Gooch moved that the commission accept Rather's resignation; commissioners offered remarks thanking Rather for seven years of service and the motion to accept was seconded and approved by voice vote. Gooch said the commission and mayor Joe Carr conveyed appreciation and best wishes.
County legal counsel (referred to in the record as "Nick") explained the expedited process to fill the vacancy under local rules: formal notice by the county clerk can be waived, the commission approved a motion to waive that notice, and the body agreed to modify the application timeline so candidates may submit applications to the county mayor's office through Aug. 1. Steering committee chair Craig Harris said steering will meet Aug. 4 to consider applications and make a recommendation to the county commission; the August county commission meeting will consider any recommendation and commissioners may still nominate candidates from the floor on that day.
The commission voted to waive the clerk's formal notice and to allow the abbreviated application schedule. County staff offered to circulate application details and qualification guidelines; the election administrator or mayor's office will be available to answer questions about residency or eligibility.
