Wicomico schools report blueprints, grants and staff 'extra mile' awards

At the November meeting, district leaders recognized three extra-mile award winners for October and provided a grants update and blueprint status report. Presenters described the winners’ contributions: an English teacher piloting AP Seminar and organizing a trunk-or-treat event; a Del Mar Elementary staff member active in Kindness Kids and tutoring; and a central-office technology staffer who helped resolve account and platform sync issues.
Doctor Briggs (presenting under the superintendent’s report) said the district continues to coordinate with the Accountability and Implementation Board (AIB) following an October progress-monitoring conference and will post the AIB’s materials publicly with links from the Wicomico County Public Schools website. Briggs also said the district received feedback on a previously submitted career ladder and planned to resubmit after revisions.
The grants report listed eight awards received in October totaling 'over $360,000.' Grant highlights named in the meeting included a Maryland State Department of Education drivers education grant providing $106,000 to fund tuition for low-income students; a Maryland Center for School Safety grant of $183,000 to support school resource officer stipends, training and equipment for coverage during after-school and special programs; Food Lion Feeds’ $500 to North Salisbury Elementary; a $1,000 Jack and Anne Smith Foundation grant for Pittsville schools’ pantry; a GameTime Community Champions playground grant of roughly $60,000 to Willows Elementary; and several Community Foundation awards supporting family English classes, Warrior Care Closet programming and evening high school career readiness events. Briggs said an additional 15 grant applications totaling about $114,000 were submitted in October.
No formal board action was required on the awards or the grants report during the meeting.
