Sheriff’s advisory review board presents 2025 report; commissioners urge filling vacancies

Matthew Ray, chair of the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office Advisory Review Board, presented the board’s 2025 annual report to the commission on Feb. 11.
Ray summarized the board’s role in promoting transparency and accountability through policy review and public input since its creation by ordinance in 2020. The board reported it currently has seven members, with two vacancies and a third soon to open; Ray asked the commission to continue appointing members to avoid loss of quorum that would impair the board’s work.
The report highlighted the creation of a compliance officer position in the sheriff’s office — a role the commission previously funded — and said the sheriff’s office has cooperated with the board’s requests. The board also reported work reviewing policies related to artificial intelligence and unmanned aerial systems and encouraged the sheriff’s office to address privacy concerns in those areas.
Commissioners praised the board’s volunteer service and stressed the importance of constitutional policing, civilian oversight and continued appointment efforts to fill vacancies. Commissioner Eric Olivas and Vice Chair Frank Baca commended the board for its role in fostering trust between the community, the sheriff’s office and the county government.
