Board adopts 2026–27 calendar, advances policy review and honors support staff

On Jan. 14 the Cecil County Public Schools board adopted the district’s recommended 2026–27 school calendar, advanced its multi‑year policy review and recognized two employees as Support Staff of the Year.
Superintendent Dr. Lawson recommended adopting the CCPS 2026–27 calendar "as presented" while reserving the board’s right to alter it based on legislative action. A board member praised placing inclement‑weather makeup days throughout the year rather than clustering them in June; the board voted unanimously to adopt the calendar.
Staff also reported a system‑wide policy review covering roughly 458 policies, regulations and exhibits. The administration recommended language to permit retiring obsolete policies and clarified that the policy sets the "why" while regulations contain the operational "how." The board moved and unanimously adopted proposed changes to policy BFG that were presented Dec. 10, 2025. A separate student‑health policy (JHC) was presented for first reading and laid over for the required 30‑day review.
On benefits and contracts, Dr. Lawson recommended continuing UCCI as the district’s dental insurance provider for the next three benefit plan years beginning Sept. 2026; the board approved the recommendation unanimously.
In recognition remarks, Jenny Hammer presented the Support Staff of the Year awards, naming Rita Redish (bookkeeper, School of Technology) as Administrative Support Staff of the Year and Julia Jackson (kitchen manager, Elkton High School) as Student‑Centered Support Staff of the Year.
What’s next: JHC returns for a vote after the 30‑day layover; staff will report further policy review progress as remaining policies and exhibits are examined.
