Board approves two-year operational calendars and uses Presidents' Day as a makeup day if needed

The board approved the SMCPS operational calendars for 2026–27 and 2027–28 and the Chesapeake Public Charter School calendars, and separately approved adjustments to the current-year (2025–26) calendar to make up missed student days caused by recent storms.
Mr. Watson presented the two-year calendars and described stakeholder input from the calendar committee and a survey with more than 3,000 responses. Major changes include adding a sixth preservice day, moving monthly early-dismissal days from Fridays to Wednesdays, and designating Columbus Day as a professional development day. The board voted to approve the calendars as presented.
The board also approved using three built-in makeup days in June and converting Presidents' Day (Monday, Feb. 16) into a student day for the current year to make up one of the missed days. If a fifth inclement-weather day becomes necessary, the board recommended the Monday after Easter (April 6) as an additional makeup option, subject to state approval. The board directed staff to file necessary paperwork with the State Board of Education or the state superintendent to formalize the makeup-day change.
Board members emphasized the pragmatic need to use built-in makeup days and thanked the calendar committee for broad stakeholder input.
