Board adopts AI-use policy to guide classroom and operational tools

The St. Mary's County Board of Education adopted Policy EHB on Feb. 3, a district-wide policy on the adoption and use of artificial intelligence. Presenters said the policy is intended to support instructional and operational goals, protect student and staff privacy, uphold academic integrity and ensure AI augments rather than replaces professional judgment.
District staff described the policy as a framework that will be paired with regulations carrying the implementation detail and safety guidelines. One speaker said the policy "should be additive, it should not be...replace anything," emphasizing the intent to preserve teacher and staff roles while permitting use of new tools. Presenters noted that the current AI steering committee has focused on teacher and staff perspectives and does not yet include student members; staff said students will be involved in future workgroups.
Trust and flexibility were recurring themes: staff said the policy is designed to be updated as AI tools evolve and that district codes of conduct and acceptable-use policies will be updated to incorporate AI-specific language. The board approved the policy on a voice vote.
The policy was presented as a second reading with no substantive changes since its Jan. 8 introduction and Jan. 21 public comment period.
