Parish officials release draft coastal master plan with 235 proposed projects for public review

Consultants with Scattered Acres Ranch, Scribe Wetland Services and Tetra Tech presented a draft coastal master plan to the Cameron Parish Police Jury on Sept. 2 that lists 235 candidate projects across hydrologic restoration, shoreline stabilization, ridge restoration and flood protection measures.
"We received 235 total projects proposed," the presenter said, describing outreach that included five public meetings in communities across the parish and stakeholder input used to prioritize projects. The draft identifies 24 potential funding sources and a GIS database to help track project locations and eligible funding.
Why it matters: Jurors and consultants said the plan aims to restore and enhance coastal habitats, reduce flood damage, sustain parish cultural and economic infrastructure and make projects eligible for state and federal funding if the plan is incorporated into the state master plan.
What the plan contains: The consultants listed categories including about 52 marsh creation projects, 116 restoration projects, 35 shoreline bank stabilization projects and 32 hurricane/flood protection projects. They also described ridge restorations, hydrologic restoration (clean‑out canals, water control structures) and prioritization strategies for projects that would be added over time as a living document.
Public review and next steps: Consultants said the draft will be posted on the police jury website for roughly 30 days for public review; jurors encouraged residents to review the maps and project list and provide input. If the jury approves a final plan that becomes included in the state plan it will improve access to federal and state funding, the consultants said.
The jury did not take a final vote on the draft at the meeting; staff and consultants said they would continue stakeholder engagement and update the plan as projects are refined.
