AFSCME urges board to address wages and equipment after heavy snow response

Representatives of AFSCME Local 1899 addressed the board during the Jan. 29 appointments portion, thanking custodial, grounds and maintenance staff for their work throughout the week’s severe weather and raising concerns about starting wages, health‑care cost increases and the adequacy of equipment used for snow removal.
Dan Williams (field representative), Anthony Fillmore (vice president) and Glenda Robertson (local president) described conditions crews faced during the storm, including frozen snow that required heavier equipment than the district provided, and tractors with blades that were ineffective in the low‑temperature ice. AFSCME urged the district to revisit a recent wage proposal and to consider step increases and other compensation adjustments to retain staff.
Board members expressed appreciation for the workforce and asked staff to provide clarity about how negotiations would proceed; general counsel noted bargaining discussions cannot be conducted in public.
