Acadia Parish approves amendment to landfill RNG agreement after company guarantees near-term payment

Acadia Parish jurors voted Jan. 13 to accept an amendment to the landfill methane (renewable natural gas, RNG) agreement after the contractor provided a $10,000 payment and guaranteed a $490,000 follow-up payment.
President (meeting presiding officer) told jurors the contractor has altered upfront capital plans and that parish officials and a committee agreed to accept a phased payment rather than insist on an immediate $500,000 lump sum. "They paid us $10,000 last month. They guaranteed us to pay us, the $490,000 next month," the president said, explaining the committee’s recommendation to be flexible so the long-term project is not jeopardized.
Officials described the project as a multi-year effort that, once operating, will allow the parish to capture landfill methane and collect a royalty. The president said the committee projects the parish could see "anywhere from a half 1,000,000 to $1,000,000 a year" in revenue under the royalty arrangement, and that the project has historically been a liability with minimal prior revenue to the parish.
Jurors said the company has implemented measures the parish requested, including a daily safety meeting at the landfill and other risk-mitigation steps after the project prompted an increased insurance premium. Staff estimated the project would move into construction activity in March 2026 if permitting and final design proceed on schedule.
The motion to accept the contract amendment was made and seconded and carried on an aye vote. Jurors emphasized the amendment was approved by the committee and staff had reviewed contractual assurances that the guaranteed payment would be delivered.
What’s next: County staff will continue to monitor the contractor’s progress and the parish will await the next payment and the start of methane collection work in 2026.
