Veterans affairs director outlines services, supervisors appoint new commissioner

Supervisors pressed for clearer reporting: one asked why county quarterly reports required by Iowa code (due Jan. 30, April 30, July 30 and Oct. 30) have not been filed for two years and asked for simple numeric metrics—how many veterans are being served and how much county aid is being paid—so the board can judge whether part-time staffing is sufficient. Echeverria said federal records are redacted for HIPAA reasons but pledged to provide aggregate counts and asked the board to consider simplifying reporting to one annual report showing service counts if the quarterly submission is burdensome for a part-time office.
The director also raised concerns after a supervisor said some veterans appear to be seeking services from neighboring counties. Echeverria asked supervisors to document any examples so he can investigate and said outreach and part-time hours can affect where veterans seek help.
Supervisors also suggested updating intake forms that currently use male-specific language and expanding listed eligibility categories to include National Guard members. Echeverria said the form originates from the state and that he would contact state officials about updating it.
What happens next: the board approved the commissioner appointment and asked the veterans affairs director to provide numeric service reports to supervisors and to follow up on form updates with state contacts.
