Superintendent Thomas Taylor opened the Jan. 26 board meeting by recognizing Muslim American Heritage Month and International Day of Education, framing both observances as opportunities to celebrate inclusivity and the contributions of diverse communities to the school system.
Board member Carla Silvestri (on the record as a school board member at large) introduced Daniel Yip, honored for his work as a supervisor in English language development and for advancing instruction for multilingual learners. The board praised Yip’s two decades of teaching experience and his leadership in supporting equitable access to instruction.
Julie Yang called forward staff and leadership from Diamond Elementary to mark the school’s Maryland Blue Ribbon designation. MCPS celebrated Diamond’s teaching, leadership and community participation; the speaker noted only seven schools in the state won the federal/state Blue Ribbon distinction this year, five of which are public, and two are MCPS schools.
Wilson Williams Elementary School staff were also recognized for their Maryland Blue Ribbon distinction; board members applauded the schools’ high attendance and community engagement.
The board took photos with honorees and thanked families, students and staff for their contributions to student success. These recognitions were presented before the business portion of the meeting.
