Board approves final plans and bid release for Tedesco shelter and restroom project

The Story County Board of Supervisors voted Feb. 10 to approve final plans and to release bids for phase 4 of the Tedesco park improvements, which include a picnic shelter built from recycled shipping containers, three restrooms (two accessible and reservable), a kitchenette that can be reserved, and a 16‑space parking lot.

Ryan, county park staff, said the shelter design uses recycled shipping containers to match other on‑site facilities and features prairie‑themed murals, low‑LED motion‑activated lighting and permeable pavers to demonstrate water‑quality practices. Ryan told the board that funding for the project comes from the county bond referendum, remaining TIF funds and the conservation trust fund; he also noted a $50,000 donation from Hunziker (listed in the presentation) will be applied to construction costs. “Gives us a funding total of about 1.2,” Ryan said while walking through the cost opinion and funding breakdown.

Board members questioned reservation practices, potential operating costs, and insurance. Ryan said routine on‑site rounds, reservation key codes and daily checks by conservation staff will be used to manage the facility and that kitchenette access will be restricted to reserved groups. He described paint as the preferred durable finish for the exterior artwork after evaluating decals and etching.

The board approved the final specifications and authorized a March 3 bid opening. Staff will return with bid results and a recommendation to award a construction contract.
