Atchison County commissioners approve auditor contract, leases, tax abatement and routine purchases

The Atchison County Board of County Commissioners approved a slate of administrative measures during its regular meeting on Feb. 10, 2026, including the selection of an auditor, several purchase orders, a two‑year farm lease for a future road and bridge site, and an emergency tax abatement for a fire-damaged property.
The board voted 2–0 to select Forvis Mazars as the county’s auditor for the fiscal years covered by the recent RFP. Chair said the county will prepare a contract with the firm and return it for approval at a subsequent meeting.
Other approved actions included a $3,945 purchase order for 2025 Esri desktop (ArcGIS) publisher licensing to be paid from the GIS contractual services budget and a $4,100 annual ELVIS elections fee charged to the clerk’s elections budget. The commission also approved a two‑year renewal of a 12.5‑acre cash farm lease (off Mead Road) intended to preserve land for a future road and bridge facility at $1,450 total cash rent (about $116 per acre).
On property tax relief, the commission approved a disaster relief determination for 302 North 2nd Street (owners Dolan and McKelvey) after a fire that the county described as devastating. The appraiser recommended and the board approved an abatement equal to 88% of the parcel’s 2026 tax assessment.
The board also approved a 2026 memorandum of understanding with the Atchison County Lake Committee and an organization resolution authorizing specified staff to manage county credit-card accounts. County staff indicated the lake memorandum was reviewed and found legally sufficient. Chair said the county will finalize contracts and bring paperwork back for formal signatures.
The actions were routine, and commissioners said staff will return with contracts or additional documentation where needed. The commission adjourned and planned to continue budget work at 1 p.m.
