Redmond accepts $1 million HUD grant — split with Bellevue — to buy electric fire engine

Deputy Chief Michael Despain told the committee the Redmond Fire Department secured a $1 million HUD Community Project Funding grant toward an electric fire engine, a competitive award negotiated and shared with Bellevue.
Despain said the HUD grant is a partnership with Bellevue and will be split roughly 50/50 — about $500,000 to Redmond and $500,000 to Bellevue — with no local matching funds required. The funds must be used exclusively to purchase the engine or to reimburse the department for that purchase.
The engine is being built in Wisconsin; Despain estimated mid-December delivery followed by roughly six weeks to upfit the vehicle, so a ribbon-cutting is tentatively scheduled for late January, subject to winter weather and shipping delays. He said the city is unlikely to receive reimbursement until February or March after executing the required agreement with HUD.
Councilors thanked staff and agreed to move the grant acceptance to the Nov. 19 consent calendar for the council meeting.
