Rotary asks for county support to sustain public water stations; board approves one-year funding

Representatives of the Matthews Rotary Club presented the board with a request to support ongoing maintenance for countywide drinking-water stations installed under the "Water for Everyone" program. Ron Lambert told the board the Rotary has installed five stations across the county so far and has raised roughly $99,000 through grants and donations to cover installation costs and early operation.
Lambert requested county support for long-term maintenance: $2,500 per year to cover quarterly testing and annual UV-lamp replacement for multiple stations (or, alternatively, a one-time $25,000 lump sum). He said the Rotary’s grant requirements favor ongoing local-government support to ensure continuity after the Rotary’s initial build-out.
Board members discussed funding sources and indicated either the county’s contingency fund or maintenance budget could cover the first-year contribution. The board made a motion and approved the Rotary’s request during the meeting; Miss Wilson will determine whether the funds come from contingency or maintenance for this fiscal year and budget the item in community development in future years if appropriate.
The Rotary said it will supply usage data and station locations; the county will coordinate follow-up on details and potential public-well alternatives.
The approval was procedural for the current fiscal year and the board emphasized future-year budgeting decisions will be considered during the regular budget cycle.
