Marquette County committee divided over Central Sands groundwater consortium letter of support

Members of the Marquette County Land & Water Conservation Committee spent substantial time on a proposed legislative letter from the Central Sands Groundwater Collaborative, with members sharply divided over its tone and targets.

Ken Borzik told the committee he viewed the letter as skewed toward blaming agricultural producers, particularly the egg industry. "If you read into this letter, they're more focused on the egg end of the spectrum," Borzik said, adding he believed the letter was "one-sided" and expressed reluctance to be associated with it.

Pat, who represents county staff involvement in the Central Sands group, said the collaborative includes six counties and that member counties were not united behind the draft. "This is not Golden Sands. This is a Central Sands Groundwater County Collaborative, our 6 county," Pat said, and described mixed responses from neighboring counties (some counties voting no or altering the wording).

Members debated whether the county should sign a letter of support, whether signing would be perceived as assigning blame for nutrient concerns, and whether the county's vote on separate funding (MDV) would be interpreted as endorsing the letter. The chair asked for a motion; the meeting transcript shows the chair invited a motion to consider a letter of support but does not record a final committee vote on the letter.

Because the transcript contains substantial dispute but no recorded outcome on the letter, the committee left the matter unresolved pending further discussion or a formal motion at a later time.
