Nevada County board approves one-year extension of probation officers’ contract, including pay adjustments

The Nevada County Board of Supervisors voted Feb. 10 to approve a one-year side-letter agreement with the Probation Peace Officers Association (PPOA) that moves the unit’s contract expiration from 2026 to June 30, 2027.
Patrick Eidman, Assistant County Executive Officer, said the extension smooths bargaining cycles across county units and generates administrative savings. Wendy Broadnick, the county’s Director of Human Resources, described the pay terms: "The terms do include additional salary increases within this unit effective [fiscal year] 2026–27, a 3% cost of living adjustment and also a 1% equity adjustment," and she said a second 1% equity adjustment will occur in January 2027 per a staff correction.
Staff told the Board the cost and pension implications have been accounted for and that funding for the side letter is included in the proposed FY 2026–27 budget. Supervisor questions focused on timing and whether the extension preserves each party’s bargaining rights; Patrick Eidman said the extension was negotiated with PPOA in the fall and is meant to align bargaining cycles so multiple units negotiate together in future years.
The motion to approve the side letter was moved by Speaker 48 and seconded by Speaker 10; a roll-call vote recorded unanimous approval across the five districts present.
What this means: The one-year extension delays reopener negotiations for PPOA until the combined cycle in 2027 and provides modest, budgeted pay adjustments for probation officers.
