Brighton school district honors students and staff in December recognition program

At its Dec. 2 meeting the Brighton Central School District recognized students and staff with ‘Brighton Believer’ awards and additional staff honors, citing leadership, service and classroom impact.
Dr. McGowan presented the Brighton Believer Awards and other staff recognitions at the Dec. 2 Brighton Central School District Board of Education meeting, honoring students, teachers and staff for service and leadership.
The district named students Eliana Salino and Iona Jimenez for leadership and their conference presentation work; the Board also recognized teacher Rosemary Holpeth of French Road Elementary for sustained classroom impact and support to families. Dr. McGowan described nominees as exemplifying the district’s values of “integrity, respect, responsibility, kindness and self‑control.”
Other staff recognitions included Jamie Porta, named the Rochester Section of the American Chemical Society’s high‑school chemistry teacher of the year; Alpa Kandar, acknowledged by the town for supporting South Asian culture as adviser to the Bollywood Dance Club; and Derek Biel, who received a technology award from the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The district said nominations come from students, parents and colleagues and invited the public to nominate future honorees via the district website.
No formal board action was required for the recognitions. The presentation closed with brief applause and a transition to a campus‑wide facilities update and public participation segment.
