The Albany City Commission voted Feb. 3 to authorize staff to submit a $25,000 grant application to the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council, with a 10% city match. The grant, presented by the fire chief, would be used to purchase handheld radios for emergency scenes; staff estimated equipment costs at roughly $8,000 per radio and said the award could cover up to three units.
The chief described the grant as annual and said the city match would help reduce general-fund expenditures for the department. Commissioners moved and seconded the resolution and adopted it by roll call after no additional discussion.
What the resolution does: the vote authorizes staff to pursue the grant application and obligates the city only to provide the required 10% match if the grant is awarded and accepted by the commission at that time. It does not commit city funds beyond that contingent match obligation.
Quote: “This grant will take a little of the burden off of our general fund,” the fire chief said when describing the equipment purchase.
Next steps: staff will submit the application to the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council and report back to the commission on award status and any required match commitments.
