Duvall commission lays out spring and summer community arts plans, contest budgets

Commission staff told the Cultural Community Cultural Commission on Feb. 9 that a series of spring and summer programs are underway, including a Holi celebration, a scavenger‑hunt public‑art rollout, a World Photography Day contest and an Earth Day recycled‑materials competition.
The facilitator announced the Holi event date as March 14 and said staff and a volunteer committee will set the time and remaining logistics. She described a scavenger‑hunt project inspired by a mural in front of the Duvall Market: ten etched metal black‑tailed hawks will be placed at city‑owned locations and paired with a community rock‑painting party. "When we launched that, the other thing we were thinking about doing is, creating, like, a community art party," the facilitator said.
The commission also discussed making a ColorPop pilot for small bursts of color on city‑owned walls, boulders or courts; commissioners were asked to photograph possible city‑owned locations for staff to check ownership. The facilitator emphasized that crosswalks on Main Street are under Washington State Department of Transportation jurisdiction and that painted crosswalk art on Main would not be approved by WSDOT.
For World Photography Day (Aug. 19), the commission has budgeted $1,500 for prize money and plans to decide categories (adult/youth, amateur/professional) and submission rules at the March meeting. The facilitator suggested public voting or display at a summer stage event as possible judging formats.
On Earth Day, a recycled‑materials giraffe competition will be held with a $1,000 budget and outreach to schools; staff will create flyers and aim for at least 30 days' notice. The commission also discussed the 'old book bench' sculpture challenge and possible Eagle Scout involvement to build a lighter replacement.
The commission asked members to bring site suggestions and contest ideas to the March meeting to finalize logistics and promotion.
