Hofer Elementary reports gains in reading, math and attendance under MTSS and PBIS work

Hofer Elementary staff presented the site’s three goals — academic achievement, a safe and healthy learning environment, and parent/community engagement — and highlighted specific programs and outcomes during the Jan. 14 Banning Unified board meeting.
Staff described data‑driven work including classroom data posters, regular data chats with principals and teachers, use of I‑Ready diagnostics and a Jane Shafer writing rubric for objective assessment of student writing. Hofer reported assessment improvements this year: ELA increased by 17.8 points, math by 6.2 points and science by 8.8 points (midyear comparisons shared in the presentation). The school also reported a 12.1% reduction in chronic absenteeism and said it has increased student council membership and field‑trip opportunities.
Hofer described targeted supports through MTSS and a new UA block, branded Appaloosa Academy, to serve diverse learners without disrupting core instruction; the site added three new SDC classes (including an added moderate‑severe class) and introduced a new curriculum for mod/severe classrooms. Staff also explained PBIS incentives (raffle tickets, school store) and a new incentive room for students.
Hofer highlighted family engagement plans including a spring fling dance, Litapalooza participation on March 4 and expanded volunteer opportunities. Trustees did not vote on the presentation; it was received as information.
