Henrico County School Board elects Irving chair, Young vice chair and Burton clerk during reorganization meeting

Madison Irving was elected chair of the Henrico County School Board at the board’s Jan. 8, 2026, work session, following nominations and a voice vote. Superintendent Cashwell opened the election process and the board moved to approve Irving’s nomination, with one member recorded as opposed.

The vote followed routine procedural business, including approval of the meeting agenda. The board then nominated and approved Ryan Young as vice chair and Tiffany Burton as clerk; each nomination was approved by voice vote after motions and seconds were recorded.

Cashwell recommended establishing the second and fourth Thursdays of each month as the regular meeting dates for the school board “to comply with chapter 7, title 22 of the Code of Virginia.” The board approved that schedule. Cashwell also recommended, citing Code of Virginia § 22.1-76, that the chief of school leadership be designated as his designee to attend school board meetings in his absence and that the chief of staff be named as the alternate; the board approved that recommendation.

On committee assignments the board asked members whether anyone had conflicts or requested changes; no conflicts were raised and existing committee assignments will continue. The board reported it had received no public comments for the session. The next meeting was announced for Jan. 22 at Newbridge Learning Center.

The session consisted primarily of organizational items and procedural votes; no formal policy debates or new business items were introduced during this meeting. The meeting was adjourned after the announcements.
