The Michigan State Board of Canvassers voted to certify the list of candidates who filed to run in a governor-called special election to fill a vacancy in the state Senate.
Director Bridal told the board the candidates filed by paying the filing fee rather than submitting signature petitions and that “there were no challenges to their affidavits of identity.” She said the special primary is slated for Feb. 3, 2026, with the general contest to be held on the May 2026 election date.
Unidentified Speaker 6 moved “that the board certify the candidates appearing on the attached list as sufficient and be certified to the secretary of state for the February election,” and the motion was seconded and approved. At least one board member vocalized “Aye” and the chair announced the motion passed.
Bridal told the board the secretary of state’s office handles identity-affidavit questions and that the bureau will continue routine processing for any future challenges. She said all filings in this case were fee-based, so there were no signature petitions to review.
The board’s certification is an administrative step that forwards the list to the secretary of state; staff will include any staff report notes at the certification deadline if new challenges arise. The board did not take up any additional challenges or make any changes to the certified list during the meeting.
