NDOT: Antioch Pike pilot repurposed travel lanes, cut speeds and kept delays minimal

Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure staff presented results from a long-term tactical urbanism pilot on Antioch Pike in the Glencliff neighborhood, saying the corridor's repurposed lanes reduced vehicle speeds and improved walking and biking conditions with minimal travel-time penalty.
"We were able to lower drivers at a speed where if there was a crash it would not be as serious," said Kobi Langer, livability planner, summarizing the safety rationale for repurposing two outside lanes for walking and biking. Langer said before the pilot the average speed during school-zone times was about 27 miles per hour when the school-zone limit was 15 mph and that the 85th-percentile speed was near 35 mph.
NDOT staff reported that after testing and implementing lane repurposing, average speeds across measured periods fell into the low-to-mid 20s and that 97 to 99 percent of drivers were traveling under the 35-mph posted limit used for the corridor study intervals. The presentation included counts of walking activity, references to property damage and crashes that neighbors reported, and steps of community engagement including open-streets events and school outreach.
In response to concerns about congestion, staff said a complete traffic study found negligible impacts to travel times. "The max delay is only 20 seconds which is [the] amount of time it takes to wash your hands," Langer said, framing the trade-off as measurable safety gains with minimal delay.
Staff attributed the project——funding to a mix of sources, including a state Healthy Built Environment grant and support from the Bridgestone Foundation, and described the pilot as a pathway to assessing whether the treatment should become a permanent capital project.
NDOT presented the data at an informational workshop; the city did not take a formal vote on the corridor during the session.
