Weld County approves first reading of ordinance to define, regulate data centers

Weld County commissioners on Jan. 26 approved on first reading a zoning ordinance that would define "data centers" in Chapter 23 of the Weld County Code and set where and how they may be sited.
Bridal Fletcher of Planning Services told commissioners the ordinance will "define data centers, which are not currently in chapter 23 zoning," and will list them as a use by special review in agricultural zones outside subdivision townsites and subject them to site plan review in all industrial zones. Fletcher said the Planning Commission will hold a hearing on Feb. 3, 2026 and the board will receive its recommendation before a second reading.
Commissioner Jason Maxey moved to approve the measure on first reading; Commissioner Kevin Ross seconded and the motion passed on a voice vote. The approval advances the ordinance to the Planning Commission for a formal recommendation and to a subsequent board hearing for final action.
The ordinance, identified in the packet as Code Ordinance 20 26-01, does not change any specific project approvals; it sets definitions and review pathways for future proposals. No members of the public spoke during the allotted public-hearing portion on the ordinance at this meeting.
